Memories from the time of mining In Lejaskogen and Lejakärret there are plenty of traces of older mining activities. Copper has been the most desirable mineral, but iron ore, limestone and silvery lead luster have also been mined in the area.
Lejagruvan consists of several mines and has also been called Mårdshytte copper mines. In the Leja mine, copper was mined for a few years in the 1550s, but was then mined only sporadically due to unprofitability. Mining flourished again during the World War 1914-1918, when the price of copper rose sharply.
Apart from a transformer station on the Nybergsfältet, there are only ruins left today, along with about a hundred mine holes, several slag heaps and, of course, the great big mole pond in Lejakärret.
